PVI Students Organize Book Drive
Ava Paparello ’26 and Teagan Henry ’26 recently worked together to plan and carry out a children’s book drive within the school and community.
“Growing up fortunate enough to never think about the resources needed to learn made me want to step in and make an impact on children who don’t have the same opportunity,” shares Ava.
Teagan and Ava are members and officers of Paul VI's chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). FBLA is a club that strives to educate high school students on different aspects of business in the real world.
After publicizing their effort through afternoon announcements, Thursday’s Thoughts and the hallway monitors, the book drive was held at school from February 17-21, 2025. The girls set up bins in front of Campus Life for students to fill as they entered school in the morning. The bins were labeled by grade and the drive was also a classwide competition, with the class bringing in the most books receiving a dress down day. The girls also set up collection bins on their front steps to collect books in their own neighborhoods.
The girls dropped off all the books collected to Reading Is Fundamental of Northern Virginia, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to motivate children to read by providing them with high-quality, free books of their choosing and to work alongside them, their parents, and their community to make reading a fun and meaningful part of their lives.
Both Teagan and Ava found the experience to be a rewarding way to give back. “It was eye-opening to see the amount of need in our community. We wanted to step in and do something to make a difference,” shared Teagan.
