Students Present Their DIS Engineering

On May 22, 2024, Jillian Villaver '24, Katie Boland '24, and Jacob Ramsey '24, shared their Directed Independent Studies (DIS) presentations with parents, friends, faculty, and administration.
Katie Boland and Jillian Villaver presented their work on "Active Radiation Shielding to Protect Astronauts on a Mission to Mars."

Jillian and Katie made a great team. In the 1950s, NASA realized that radiation from space was causing long term medical issues for astronauts. According to NASA, “Space radiation can penetrate habitats, spacecraft, equipment, spacesuits, and can harm astronauts.” With the desire to send astronauts further and for longer into space, it will become ever more important to limit astronauts’ exposure to radiation in space.

Jacob Ramsey presented his work on Grouper: A Timesaver for Teachers using Google Classroom.

Jacob made a plan to design a software add-on to Google Classroom which provides a more efficient way for students to create work groups and minimize the workload of teachers when grading, planning and teaching. He had a virtual meeting with a lead engineer from Google's Classroom add-ons department. The engineer provided a lot of great tips, and thought that this would be great press for Google if Jacob can make it work.

The students needed to define, justify, design, and report their results for a problem of their choosing. They needed to contact experts in their field as well. Many thanks to Mr. Burkat for sponsoring these students' studies.

DIS provides an opportunity for qualified and approved students to pursue a project of interest beyond the normal curricular requirements, under the aegis of a faculty advisor.

Guidelines for a Directed Independent Study: The student should initiate an initial discussion with a teacher he/she wishes to work with regarding the proposed topics of study. The student should draft a study proposal and then have a meeting and discussion with the teacher. It is expected that edits to the proposal will be made after this discussion.  More information can be found in our Course Catalog.
